Tutorial Outline

Due to fast-paced change and the fickle nature of customer expectations, organizations that formerly depended solely on technology to realize their potential have awakened to the fact that they need a more adaptable link from the company’s strategy and the set of IT solutions to be delivered. They developed IT architecture to hope to fill this need but they discovered that IT architecture alone is often not aligned to business value and the investment was wasted. It is now apparent that process-oriented Business Architecture’s time has come to bridge the gap and to ensure that, whatever may happen, the business and all of its capabilities can respond in time. This half-day tutorial will show you how to develop an aligned Business Architecture for your enterprise that starts with business drivers and strategic intent and defines the capabilities required for the enterprise to realize its goals. All components from Process Architecture to IT Architecture and human capability will connect to ensure the creation of business value.

This tutorial is intended to provide a complete approach for managing aligned Business Architecture components: Strategic Planning Methods, Stakeholder Analysis, Process Architecture, Knowledge Mapping, Organization Alignment, Governance and Performance, Competencies Definition, IT Capability Interaction, Program Prioritization and Architecture Modeling and Knowledge Access Technologies

  • Drivers and Principles of Business Architecture
  • Strategic Intent and Stakeholders (Why)
  • Stakeholders and Relationships (Who and Why)
  • Business Processes as Integrators (How)
  • Alignment of Architectural Components
  • Process Architectural Technologies
  • Summary

Tutorial Outline

The promise of Business Process Management Systems (BPMS) is to fully synchronise, orchestrate or choreograph the execution of any business process that is conceivable regardless of whether the performers are systems, people or organizations. One challenge has been to define the language that could articulate such execution. The response from industry standards bodies has been languages such as BPeL from OASIS. In order to bridge the gap from business needs to such languages a new modeling notation has been evolving under the auspices of the Business Process Management Initiative (BPMI). This notation, known as the Business Process Modeling Notation (BPMN) is now available in some tools and some BPMS environments. More will be available soon. This session will describe the positioning and essential features of the BPMN notation.

  • The challenge of BPMS specification
  • Emerging standards such as BPeL
  • A walkthrough of the BPMN notation
  • What's next?
