What
Would the World Be Like If There Were No Business Analysts?
Paul Turner, Director,
Business & IS Skills
This presentation focuses on the importance of the role
of the Business Analyst in the modern enterprise. In addition
to looking at the many flavours of the role, including
in an Agile environment, it discusses the relationship
with other disciplines. It also includes a light hearted
look at the world of Business Analysis involving interactive
audience participation and a view of what it would be
like if the role of the Business Analyst did not exist.
While facilitating this discussion the speaker will probably
upset all other disciplines within the IS/IT profession.
So beware. Key points:
- The importance of the Business Analyst role
- The different flavours of the Business Analyst
role
- The world if there were no Business Analysts
- Relationship with other professional disciplines
- The role of Business Analysts in an Agile environment

More Important
Than Ever: The BA Role in Agile Projects and Agile Transition
Allan Kelly, Consultant,
Software Strategy
The role of the BA is often misunderstood by Agile teams
and few Agile methods have much to say about the BA role.
Yet ensuring business needs are understood and met is
essential.
In this session Allan Kelly will examine the role of
BA and Product Owner in Agile teams and during the transition
to Agile development. Using examples and research the
session will look at:
- Where the BA fits in
- The challenges for a BA in an Agile team
- New responsibilities and new ways of working
- When the BA should take a backseat
- How less can lead to more business value

Getting to the Knowledge Inside:
Clean Language As An Aid to Requirements Gathering
Tony Bidgood, First
Utility
Judy Rees, Director, X-Ray
Listening
Have you noticed how often we encounter design and delivery
problems that can be traced back to requirements gathering:
gaps, misunderstandings, misinterpretation and general
dissatisfaction? And do you know why focusing on problem
solving can lead to failure?
Research shows that up to 95 of our thinking, decision-making
and learning takes place outside of conscious awareness.
How can we tap into the hidden depths and profitably use
the unconscious minds of our customers, colleagues and
ourselves?
'Clean Language' is increasingly being used to do just
this, working with the natural imagery and metaphors of
the unconscious to draw out valuable information.
In this practical session you will learn, through practical
activities and group working:
- What Clean Language can do for you
- How you can apply it to requirements gathering
- what to do and how to do it
- How to avoid unwanted outcomes and achieve project
success

Keynote: Why are you doing
this to us? Technology Change as Friend and Foe
Mark Harrison, Creative
Lead for Technology and Innovation, BBC
We’re in the middle of a new industrial revolution.
Nowhere is this more the case than the media sector: digitally-enabled
audiences are requiring broadcasters to make more content,
in different ways, for less money. A complete retooling
of the production process is required – but it’s
proving difficult to achieve. In this presentation Mark
Harrison explores why creative people are so threatened
by change. He argues that the pain associated with technology
innovation will not be reversed until organisations take
a fundamentally different approach from the ones used
by most consultants and analysts. Mark has worked in media
for over 20 years – both for the BBC and the independent
sector. Mark is now the Creative Lead for Technology and
Innovation at the BBC. |

Working Successfully With
Project Managers Elizabeth
Harrin, Programme Manager, Spire Healthcare
Project managers and business analysts don’t always
see eye to eye, and this leads to conflicts on the project
team. It’s not always about a clash of personalities;
it’s more often just different approaches to working,
different goals and different methodologies. Drawing on
her own experience as a project manager, Elizabeth will
discuss how project managers and business analysts attack
the same topic from different angles and address how to
work effectively together. The presentation will cover:
- What project managers do and why they don’t
intrinsically value BA
- How to help project managers understand what BA
is and the benefits it brings
- How to think like a PM to get PMs to do what you
want
- How to avoid the “them and us” attitudes
and foster a successful working environment.
- This presentation will provide a real insight into
what project managers think about business analysts
and how BAs can use this to their advantage to drive
home successful solutions.

Why Business Analysts
Should Model Data Keith
Gordon, Principal, Gordon Blain Associates Ltd
The development of models is an essential aspect of the
business analyst role. These models may be used to help
to understand the business problem that needs to be solved,
to help to elicit requirements for an IT system or to
unambiguously describe to the system designers and developers
what the IT system has to achieve. Most business analysts
will happily develop activity and process models yet will
shy away from developing data models. Yet data models
are the best way to concisely and unambiguously document
the information requirements of a business. This presentation
will cover:
- The importance of models in requirements elicitation
and requirements documentation.
- The roles of a data model.
- An introduction to data modelling concepts.

Model
Driven Development (MDD) – Empowering the Business
Analyst
Dr. Franco Civello,
Principal Consultant, RDF Group
MDD significantly reduces software development costs and
ensures all design decisions are made and enforced at
the Business Analysis level. Thanks to new tools and frameworks
such as Mendix, which interprets Visual Models directly
into a runtime environment, MDD is now a realistic option
for the majority of application development projects.
This presentation explores the principles of MDD and attempts
to answer:
- How does traditional Business Analysis fit within
the MDD process?
- What new skills do Business Analysts require to
contribute effectively to the MDD process?
