BEST PRACTICES: Avoiding the MDM Systems Integration Money Pit
Aaron Zornes, Chief Research Officer, The MDM Institute

The ongoing buzz around MDM is rivalled only by the intensity in which systems integrators have "found MDM religion". Such projects typically incur a substantial amount of systems integration in the first 12-24 months as businesses wire up their data sources into the enterprise’s customer data hub, e.g., the typical Global 5000 enterprise plans to spend £500 thousand for MDM software solutions with an additional investment of 4X that amount in SI services. Given the substantial investment businesses undertake with their SI partners, this is an area that must be given scrutiny – not only in an effort to contain costs, but to insure the success of this vital infrastructure investment. This presentation will discuss:
  • Determining the evaluation criteria for selecting SI partners for your MDM projects
  • Identifying which SIs are market leaders in your industry & your chosen software technologies
  • Managing the SI relationship (avoiding "brain drain" & inflationary blended rates) – from phase zero & POCs all the way through to systems integration

Conference Chairman Keynote
Product Evaluation Criteria & Field Reports for MDM Solutions
Aaron Zornes,
Chief Research Officer, The MDM Institute

Master data is a critical asset that must be increasingly synchronized within and beyond the enterprise. During 2008-09, many large enterprises will focus on MDM by deploying a 3rd generation database-centric infrastructure to deliver a panoramic customer view across multiple channels, business lines, and heterogeneous IT environments. This session will focus on the "why" and "how" of MDM technical evaluations by providing insight into:
  • Understanding the pros & cons of the dominant architectural models and evaluation criteria – e.g., data models, process models, scalability, privacy management, etc.
  • Inventorying the vendor landscape – e.g., registry, data hub, EAI/EII, portals, SOA-based web services, data service provider, etc.
  • Applying a rigorous methodology to MDM product evaluations & implementations for both mega vendor solutions (IBM MDM Server, Microsoft MDM, Oracle Enterprise MDM, SAP NetWeaver MDM) and best-of-breed (D&B/Purisma DataFlux, Initiate, Siperian, Teradata, & VisionWare)

Plenary Keynote
MDM - What's Behind your BI?
Cliff Longman, Chief Technology Officer, Kalido

MDM continues to be a confusing term, particularly as vendors, analysts and end-users apply the term indiscriminately to mean different things. A key component to reducing this confusion is to understand the primary business purpose behind MDM initiatives – rather than focusing on the technology that enables it. In practice, the MDM market has split into two key solution types – MDM for business intelligence and MDM for operations. Designed in large part to help organizations make better decisions through improved information, MDM for business intelligence can be an ideal starting point for companies that seek to address their MDM issues. This presentation focuses on MDM for business intelligence and will discuss:
  • Leveraging the differences between MDM for business intelligence and MDM for operations
  • Identifying which business purpose your organisation needs more
  • Applying best practice approaches for putting BI-focused MDM into action

Plenary Keynote
Simplifying MDM Deployments
Sean Cassidy, VP, Products, Initiate Systems, Inc

When trying to “master” something, we are “acquiring complete knowledge or understanding.” And, when mastering data, we are usually trying to develop an understanding of customers, locations, products, securities, etc., in a way that is complete, accurate and trustworthy. So, the goal of MDM is pretty simple. Right? The process of implementing an MDM solution can be complex. From a business perspective the steps required include building the business case, getting buy-in and budget approval, figuring out the business process, strategy, enterprise architecture, rules, policies and procedures, dealing with change management, and on and on. Fortunately, we don’t master data assets just for the sake of mastering them. MDM is really about solving business problems and MDM projects can be simplified by deciding what business problems you are trying to solve from the start. This presentation will draw from real-world examples of organisations that set the right priorities, achieved successful MDM deployments and are realising considerable business benefits.
  • Identifying & prioritising problems that are best solved with an MDM deployment
  • Deciding what data assets to master
  • Understanding difference between managing data & truly mastering it

INDUSTRY INNOVATION SESSION 4 - Sponsored by Identity Systems
Data Matching - The Most Critical Component of Data Quality
Suresh Menon, Director - Product Management, Identity Systems

Today “data quality” is more important than ever before as businesses are relying upon this requirement to drive profitability, increase efficiencies, better understand their customers, and make smarter business decisions. And there are a lot of drivers influencing the need for clean data: mergers and acquisitions (M&A) increasingly rely on a consolidated view of data; globalization and emerging markets mean more complex language and names enter the data stream; proliferation of both structured and unstructured information continues to impact the sheer size of today's databases. Additionally, the ability to match records despite inherent errors and variations remains paramount to any successful data quality initiative. Attendees will hear about real-world examples describing what to look for in a well-rounded data quality solution via topics such as:
  • Understanding the fundamentals of data matching & identity resolution
  • Identifying the twenty most common error types & variations … & how to overcome them
  • Recognising why international names & languages can pose a daunting challenge to data quality

Footprints in the Sand: Process Analysis for MDM
Simon Slocombe, Principal Consultant, Evaxyx (UK) Limited

It can be tempting to see MDM solely as an exercise in data integration, yet at the heart of any MDM initiative are the future state processes that will rely on the “newly mastered” information. Identifying and analysing these processes will reveal the true business benefits of MDM, and will give a vital insight as to how effective data governance can be applied. This presentation will discuss:
  • Establishing the primacy of process analysis when trying to understand the impact of MDM
  • Leveraging a natural language approach to analysing master data to reveal issues requiring active governance
  • Effectively identifying ownership as a result of this process.

EXPERT TESTIMONY: Development of Citizen-Centric Services via CDI
Tony Ellis, Head of Information Technology Unit, London Borough of Brent

Citizen-centric services are one of the main planks in the UK Transformational Government agenda. Putting the customer first was a major challenge for Brent with data scattered across nine departmental silos. Brent’s Client Index now provides a real-time master record of the council’s 270,000 citizens and integrates data from sources such as council tax, benefits, housing, education, social care, library and electoral services. The Client Index enables targeted service delivery, improves operational efficiency, reduces administration costs, helps minimise fraud, monitors performance targets and creates a potential platform for Shared Services between Boroughs. In this session, you will gain insights into how Brent employs their Client Index project for:
  • Empowering front-line staff to improve service delivery
  • Engendering an Information Governance model that supports the updating of data across the council
  • Delivering a systems platform for Government initiatives like Contact Point and Tell Us Once to provide basis for public sector-centric data standards

EXPERTS PANEL: Best Practices in Custom-Built/DIY CDI-MDM
Moderator: Aaron Zornes, Founder & Chief Research Officer, The MDM Institute
Panellists: Gavin Gibson,
Data/Information Enterprise Architect, Carphone Warehouse

Contemporary solutions to a “unified customer view,” etc. range from do-it-yourself infrastructure initiatives closely tied to the service-oriented architecture (SOA) model to commercial off-the-shelf MDM applications such as “data hubs” and “registries”. Both variations require measures of MDM middleware to aggregate, propagate, replicate, and synchronize such master data. This panel discussion will review certain of the trends and best practices regarding:
  • Justifying the initial deployment of service-oriented architecture (SOA) or enterprise service bus (ESB) frameworks
  • Unifying the necessary multiple, overlapping middleware layers – EAI. EII, & ETL
  • Determining the trade-offs of “build vs. buy” in context of mission-critical infrastructure

BEST PRACTICES: Using SAP MDM for Materials Catalogue
Tom Gulman, Shell International EP
Khuram Hussain, Hypothalamus

Managing a global materials catalogue for 15 companies spanning 4 continents is a daunting task. Shell EP implemented a global SAP R/3 system with a requirement to maintain a single materials catalogue. This required the implementation of a global process to manage the more than 4,000 requests annually covering over 30,000 materials. New projects covering the installation of equipment for new oil and gas production added additional demands on top of normal management of the catalogue. The existing tools were reaching saturation, and a pilot project was initiated to investigate the capability of SAP’s MDM to automate the request process and manage the catalogue. This session will cover the key findings about MDM as well as lessons learned concerning:
  • Determining the business drivers for the pilot
  • Managing the structure of the pilot development
  • Establishing a benefits calculator for such projects

SAP NetWeaver MDM: Taking Ericsson Forward with a Single Version of the Truth
Stacey Drinan, IT MDM Solution Area Expert and MDM Project Sponsor, Ericsson AB
Dr. Klemen Cas, Board Member, ecenta AG

Like many multi-national companies today, Ericsson AB was faced with major challenges in the area of MDM. Specifically, difficulties in data synchronization across heterogeneous systems led to multiple data silos resulting in a gradual decline in data quality and subsequent adverse effects on business operations. In the fall of 2005, Ericsson made the decision to implement SAP NetWeaver MDM to equip itself with the essential tools to support Ericsson's corporate strategy: “central data storage for all Ericsson companies worldwide”. Several MDM scenarios have successfully gone live, delivering consolidated and consistent master data throughout the systems landscape – with one huge business result addressing to avoid the previous 40% of orders getting blocked due to master data problems. As the foundation for a Services Oriented Architecture (SOA), SAP MDM has brought significant benefits to the business such as improved global spent reporting, cost-savings from data de-duplication, and fulfillment of regulatory legislation like Sarbanes-Oxley Act with centralized data management procedures. Learn from the experiences of Ericsson in this discussion of topics related to high quality master data:
  • Addressing data governance issues via a central Global MDM group focused on MDM processes
  • Applying the “shared services" group concept to provides services to both IT and business via SOA
  • Providing the foundation for global spend reporting across 130,000+ suppliers while simultaneously decreasing the number of maintained supplier data records by 35%
