Driving
Positive Business Impacts through Data Quality and Data Governance
Spend a day
with three of BT's gnarled, wizened and mightily experienced Data
Quality consultants! Discover why Data Quality is a business rather
than an IT issue.
This workshop
will help you understand why data quality issues lie at the heart
of almost all business problems. Find out how BT began its Data
Quality journey and developed principles, methodologies and governance
structures to drive cost savings in its core business. See how BT's
DQ programme facilitated the early implementation of MDM, and formed
the basis of the company's current MDM strategy .
Then try it
for yourself as CIO of the fictional Gwesty hotel and casino group.
It has some business survival issues that need to be sorted out
and quickly if it is to thrive in the cut-throat hotel and casino
business sector. Be warned though it's not for the faint hearted.
You have to do some work. This is not a 'chalk and talk' session.
You'll be expected to identify the business issues and link them
to the underlying data quality issues and come up with some proposals
to make improvements. Enjoy -- it'll be great fun.
The
day will look like this:
- Overview
of the History of DQ in BT -- how we got to where we are now --
business drivers, how governance structures were developed, journey
through DQ maturity short case studies of the projects we did
at each stage and why, success stories.
- DQ Principles
and DQ Methodology -- How we did it, why we did it in that way,
use of tools for data profiling, development of business cases,
implementation of solutions, go/no go decisions, DQ measures.
- Case Study
-- a hotel group with significant business challenges. Working
in groups of 4-6 the class will conduct a business dependency
matrix and work out how each of the problems identified could
or may be attributed to a data quality problem. Then using the
methodology discussed earlier come up with business cases and
solution proposals to be presented back for discussion/debate
to the rest of the group.

A
Framework for Effective MDM Workshop
MDM is a complex
multi-dimensional problem. This tutorial discusses a framework that
provides a roadmap for the implementation of MDM in an enterprise.
The unique requirements of MDM are discussed in the contexts of
architecture, design, physical data management, data governance,
organisational commitment, technology, information knowledge management,
and metadata. The framework is oriented to a practical realization
of MDM, but with a sound conceptual basis. There is particular stress
on how all the diverse parts of the framework interact. The tutorial
also explains how MDM differs to traditional IT endeavours such
as development projects and package acquisition. The importance
of data governance and building an organisational unit responsible
for MDM over the long term are described. Topics addressed include:
- Understanding
what Master Data is, why it is important, and its unique characteristics.
- Determining
the architectural components needed for MDM, and their interrelationships
- Identifying
how to build a broad range of functionality in MDM services
- Planning
to integrate existing applications into the MDM environment
- Providing
for the planning and organizational needs for MDM
- Establishing
the data governance requirements for successful MDM
