Keynote:
Overcoming Five Common Data Governance Roadblocks So your organization has bought into “why” they should have Data Governance. You have initial funding and support, and your program has been launched. But what about next year, and the year after that? What problems should you be watching out for? What proactive steps should you take to avoid problems, and what should you be prepared to react to? Just like you relied on a framework and roadmap to initially launch your program, you should have a reliable guidebook for navigating years 2, 3, and 4 of your Data Governance and Stewardship program. This pioneer in Data Governance, who has guided many successful programs, points out five common roadblocks to sustainable success, and she gives advice for going over, under, around, or through those roadblocks – depending on how far along you are in your Data Governance journey. |

Practical Data Stewardship David Plotkin, Manager of Data Quality, American Automobile Association More and more companies are coming to terms with the fact that they need to have a data stewardship function in order to be effective in collecting metadata (including definitions, derivations, and data quality rules), MDM, and data quality. A lot has been said and spoken about why stewardship is important, but HOW do you do it and be effective with limited resources (in the “real world”)? This presentation details how to set up a data stewardship function, how to run it, what the duties of the data stewards are, and what decisions they have to make. You will learn:

Using Collaborative Technology to Transform a Large Enterprise into a Data Governance Culture Julian P. Shelbourne, Metadata Architect, Kaiser Permanente A shortage of reliable metadata, and the lack of standard business rules and terms, was hindering our strategic goals for enterprise integration, national reporting, SOA, and seamless B2B data-exchange. We lacked alignment between our data assets and our business, but both are so complex that it was a daunting challenge. The only way to break the log-jam was to free our Subject Matter Experts from siloed work-practices and red-tape, to contribute their knowledge directly into a centralized repository, in an iterative, non-invasive, yet structured way. We designed a solution that combines close-to-real-time business-intelligence system metadata with Wiki-like contribution, governance, approval-workflow, auditability, and version-history to enable our SMEs to collaboratively define our business terms and catalog our data-assets. Learn how we overcame the constraints of our existing metadata-management infrastructure, and overcame skepticism amongst the business community, to manage our business intelligence data assets and business-rules in a whole new way. |

Bringing
Data to Life Steve Tuck, Datanomic Many data centric projects fail to deliver their full potential because their view of the data is restricted to their immediate use of it. Successful Data Governance initiatives recognise the importance of understanding and managing the entire data lifecycle to ensure that knowledge workers are equipped with the right information at the right time. This presentation draws on practical experiences from the NHS, local government and financial services for examples of how complex organisations are implementing data governance in the real world. |

A Practical,
Low-Cost Implementation of the Common Data Matrix One of the tools advocated for giving structure to Data Governance programs in an organization is the Common Data Matrix. This simple tool allows you to link data domains to data stewards and the applications that create, use, access different data domains. However, implementing this tool has not been trivial because there are no tools developed to implement the Common Data Matrix. This presentation shows a practical, low-cost tool created in Excel to implement the Common Data Matrix; how to use this tool with data stewards; successes; pitfalls; processes; and plans for the future development of more robust Data Governance tools. |

Active
and Passive Data Governance: How to manage the ongoing creation, collection,
and maintenance of data for integrated ERP systems Global corporations and even companies operating nationally struggle with managing the ongoing creation, collection, and maintenance of their data for their integrated ERP systems. This session helps you determine if there is a logical business process for master data governance and how to apply it. Examine the Passive and Active Data Governance applications and methodologies such as DataDialysis® and cApps™ for governing the creation of master data in SAP, including automated workflow, scenarios, and rules. Find out why solving data governance issues is not a technology problem, and get tips on how to gain a better understanding of how to overcome the complexities of building an effective data governance organization. |

The Consumer
Perspective on Data Governance Since Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs lost the personal information of 25 million Britons last year, news of poor data handling has dominated the headlines. An official investigation into the data loss identified no root cause for the information going astray, blaming instead "the prioritization by HMRC staff of other considerations". It is fair to say that behind the steady stream of data losses lies, not a specific cause, but a working culture which has little or no comprehension of the worth of personal information. And it is the consumer who is being placed at risk by this incompetence. Research recently supplied to Garlik, specifically into the government’s handling of data, has revealed a worrying lack of basic data protection policies to ensure the security of Britons’ personal information. This presentation will discuss:

Large Scale Data
Governance Implementation in an SOA Environment Many organizations are challenged with implementing data governance across many different shapes and sizes of data management organizations. Implementing Data Governance for the US Army is arguably the largest data governance operation taken in the governance space. The challenge is increased by a Dept. of Defense level mandate to implement SOA. This talk provides an overview of the approach focusing on:
