KEYNOTE: Formulas for Mapping Data Governance Efforts to Business Value
Gwen Thomas, President, The Data Governance Institute

Everyone says you should focus your Data Governance effort on high-value business needs. But how do you do that? How do you connect problems (such as non-standard fields or data quality problems) to compliance requirements, business drivers, and the need for specific competitive capabilities? How do you decide what information needs to address? How do you prioritize those needs, focus and frame projects, and then demonstrate the value of what you've done?

This session introduces the B-I-T Value Model, which predicates that business needs should always drive information needs, which in turn drive technology approaches. This model includes a five-step process for connecting business goals to specific business needs, information needs, information problems, and then information solutions.

Participants will learn:

  • the components of the B-I-T Value Model
  • formulas for describing value
  • 10 business justifications for conducting typical Data Governance and Management tasks.

Case Study CASE STUDY: Data Governance from the Front Line
Charles Blyth, Head of BI, CPP

Front line data governance is about driving data quality ownership back into the business, getting every resource at every data touch-point to 'own' the data. It is about getting the people involved. This session will cover what front-line data governance is, how we get there and what we need to do to ensure it is an ongoing success.

Key topics covered include:

  1. The Five data governance front line resource categories covering all touch-points across the data life-cycle
  2. Managing change to front line data governance - How do we get there?
  3. In-life monitoring and measurement - How do we ensure ongoing success.

Reduce your 'cost of doing business'
Kjell Wittmaack, Chief Knowledge Officer and Practice Director for MDM, Platon Corporate

Take any company with more than 100 employees - virtually all of them face the same challenge. The major part of the business depends on the use of high quality Master Data, yet there is no practice for the professional management of it. In most cases there is not even a plan for how to change that. Yet companies survive and operate producing their services to their customers, but when there is a disconnect between a business strategy and the means required to support it you are likely facing tremendous extra workloads - in other words the Cost of Doing Business is unnecessary high. When competing in a market on almost the same parameters (as most companies are) this is not a sustainable situation.

So why is senior management generally turning a deaf ear when discussing funding and backing for data governance or data quality improvements? There are perhaps many reasons like being fed the wrong arguments, inexperience, traditions or simply the sheer complexity of the challenges faced.

But that has to change. This talk will explore what you can do about it and how you can make a subject as dull as data a top priority for senior management. We'll drawn upon the experience from global organizations such as BP, Thomson Reuters, Monash University and some of the best practitioners out there.

Ensuring "fit for purpose" master data through business engagement
Jon Asprey, Director, Strategic Consulting - EMEA, Harte Hanks Trillium Software

The aim of any master data management programme is to deliver a "trusted" source of master data that can be highly leveraged across an organisation or business unit. However, ensuring that data is "fit for purpose" can be challenging, in that "master" data will intrinsically have a variety of uses or demands put upon it. To be able to consider all of the angles, business engagement is critical, along with the disciplines of data quality management and data governance.

This session will explore how the process of business engagement can be facilitated, with suggestions on roles, approaches and communication styles that drive business participation and the required "buy-in".

Active and Passive Data Governance - Data Governance is a Journey!
Tom Kennedy, Founder & CTO, BackOffice Associates, LLC

Creating a data governance organization that can effectively manage complex data-related relationships, roles, and scenarios can be a daunting task. Explore two methods of data governance, active and passive, and get a detailed look at the benefits and uses of each. Understand how passive data governance allows users to interact directly with source systems to monitor results and identify data issues. Find out how active data governance provides a guided process for the introduction and management of data into selected systems. Understand the four levels of data governance, from "no data governance" to "active data governance."
  • Come away with tips for leveraging these models to reduce the possibility of business process interruptions due to omissions, duplication, consistency and content errors, or a lack of data standards.
  • Determine if there is a logical business process for master data governance and how to apply it.
  • Get tips on how to gain a better understanding of how to overcome the complexities of building an effective data governance organization.

The Future of MDM: MDM-Powered Applications
Jim Cushman, Senior Vice President, Products & Services, and General Manager, Enterprise & Government, Initiate, an IBM Company

As the master data management market matures, early deployments that provided data to IT departments are no longer sufficient. The next generation of MDM will include business application front ends that provide data and information directly to the front line - business managers and decision makers - and deliver immediate value in terms of business data stewardship and real-time decision making. This presentation will discuss the different business areas within an organization that can benefit from MDM-Powered Applications and the types of applications managers can expect over the next few years including sales territory management, customer on-boarding and MDM-Powered SalesForce.com.

BEST PRACTICES: Bridging the Communications Gap Between IT and Business professionals
Cliff Longman, AdaptableData
Data governance requires a common understanding of the data to be governed across business divisions and IT professionals. Unfortunately, business people do not have the techniques to clearly define and document their data. Furthermore, the tools and techniques used by IT professionals do not lend themselves to easy communications with business people. This technique-gap frequently leads to misunderstandings and challenges setting up data governance programs.

This presentation introduces 3 techniques successfully used in the Media, CPG and Energy industries aimed specifically at improving communications between business and IT professionals. They result in a common, shared definition of business terms (such as "customer", "delivery", "net profit") that bridges the communication gap and provides a foundation for data governance definitions.

  • The role of a business model in a governance program
  • Using an existing data model to define BUSINESS terms
  • Establishing a common language from terms defined in a business model

Flexible Data Management for the Agile Business
Mark Seager, VP for Technology, EMEA Informatica

Establishing and Operationalising Data Governance: Data Quality Management Program, Masliah M Ali, Head of Data Governance, Maybank

When you are assigned to establish a Data Governance in an organisation, what do you do? How do you operationalise something that is very new in this region, how do you organise the resources, establish the strategy, get support from the management as well as the source systems owner. These were the very first questions that needed the answers when we established the Data Governance in Maybank.

The pressing need was to qualify for IRB under Basel 2. Under the legacy systems, data governance does not exist. Legacy systems works in silo. No owner takes care of the data in a structured manner. There was low emphasis on good data across the Bank. And now, almost immediately, there is a need for quality data which should have been delivered "yesterday"!

In this session, we will walk thru our actual experiences in establishing the Data Governance Dept. with specific focus on the Data Quality Management program.

  1. How to establish and operationalise a Data Quality Management Program
  2. The challenges, pitfalls and success factors
  3. strategies to adopt
