META DATA WELCOME

Dear Colleague,

On behalf of IRM UK Strategic Training in the UK and myself thank you for your interest in this, the fifth European Conference dedicated to the subject of Meta Data. This conference has now become an established event due to the extraordinary success of our previous conferences, all of which attracted hundreds of delegates from all over the world.

This conference will again be co-located with the DAMA International European Conference and Information Quality Conferences. This has proved, over the past years, an extremely effective and rewarding combination for participants. We aim to ensure that the joint conference is another wonderful opportunity for those interested in Meta Data, Information Quality and Data Management to meet and exchange experiences as well as to hear top-notch speakers concentrate on this essential area of IT. Participants of all our past conferences have particularly praised the concentration upon the topic of information management.

We have also continued the successful approach we adopted over previous years, whereby the first day offers you the opportunity to attend tutorials, which introduce the subject of Meta Data and Meta Data Management in some depth and provide a grounding for the following 2 days.

As always, the topics I have chosen for this year's conference have been derived directly from the wishes of last year's participants who requested far more case studies from people who are practising meta data professionals. The programme we have chosen for you thus provides an unparalleled source of information on meta data management in real life, with examples of the experiences of practitioners. It features a selection of international speakers from both the USA and Europe with a proven reputation both for their ability to inform and educate, but also entertain. This conference will also provide you with an ideal opportunity to meet other delegates with their own problems, experiences and solutions.

We all hope you will join us for what promises to be an exciting and immensely valuable experience. We look forward to seeing you in London in October.

About the META DATA Conference

The theme for this year’s Meta Data Europe Conference is Success in Difficult times. It concentrates on how people have managed to overcome the difficulties posed by the current emphasis on cost cutting, and have found solutions to the problems of funding, increasing complexity, reduced delivery timescales and the lack of consistent support for DM work from senior management. The following list provides a flavour of just some of the topics covered by our speakers;

  • Success stories –case studies where meta data management has produced real bottom-line benefits.
  • Targetted ‘How to’ sessions on how Meta Data Management can be used to help with:
    • Acquisition of companies and the disparity of source systems
    • Building & managing portals
    • CRM, ERM and ERP (and their failure)
    • Downsizing as technology improves
    • Internet, Web services, and Internet systems
    • Outsourcing (Cost containment)
  • Cost Justification and Cost justification methods –How to cost justify the DM function and handle the skill and resource problems
  • How to handle the problems of the maintainability of the data architecture and the Volume and complexity of data to be managed

We intend that participants of this year's conference go away with new insights into the organisational and technical aspects of this essential area.

INFORMATION QUALITY WELCOME

Dear Information or Business Professional or Manager:

What is the ROI of sound Information Quality Management?

In a word: High!

IQ speakers (who were allowed to share their benefits) at The 4th Information Quality Conference in London 27-29 October 2003 have documented savings of £324,731,000 as a result of their IQ Initiatives. That's more than One-Third Billion Pounds savings of waste and lost productivity:

  • Time recovering from process failure caused by bad data
  • Spending time to verify and correct data or hunt for it
  • Duplicate customer mail outs
  • Multiple updating of changes in redundant files
  • Scrapped materials due to inaccurate product specs
  • Fines for noncompliance to regulations from missing data
  • Cost to recover unhappy customers, etc.

Not only that, some practitioners will share how their opportunity gains have been even greater than direct savings!!! Opportunity gains like:

  • Increased sales due to higher quality customer data
  • Increased Customer Lifetime Value due to decreased customer alienation
  • Increased decision effectiveness, etc.

Organizations without sound information quality management are wasting from 10% to more than 20% of their operating revenue or budgets in process failure and information scrap and rework due to poor quality information!

In this time of economic downturn, aren’t the best costs to eliminate the costs of waste?

This Conference is pertinent for every organization requiring information. It is for you if you:

  • Do not like to see people and money resources wasted because of poor quality information
  • Desire to be state-of-the-art in business excellence
  • Care about your customers and customer satisfaction
  • Care about the bottom line & real shareholder value
  • Are willing to be a change agent for business excellence

Where is your organization investing?
In costs of recovering from process failure, doing things over and information scrap and rework?
Or, in improving processes to prevent costs of waste from poor quality information

Be part of the Information Quality revolution—Not for Information Quality sake, but for Business Quality sake!

Sincerely,

Larry English     Larry P. English

DAMA INTERNATIONAL WELCOME

Message from the Chair

Dear Colleague:

On behalf of DAMA International I want to thank all delegates for your participation in the past DAMA International Europe Conferences, and for your interest is this year’s Conference. The overwhelming success of the past European Conferences encourages us to continue expanding the size and scope and enhancing the topics of the European Conference. This Conference promises to be the best and most authoritative data management conference in Europe.

It continues to be a time of increased concern for the data management profession, particularly with the soft economy, world crises, and continued layoffs. It is a time of increased demand for information and decreased resources to meet that demand. It is a time when organizations will be held accountable for the quality of their data the same as they are held accountable for the quality of their finances, and held accountable for the management of their data resource the same as they are held accountable for the management of their human resource.

The theme of this years DAMA International Europe Conference is "Collaboration and Integration: Positioning for Change". People need to collaborate and integrate their problems, ideas, and solutions to better manage their data resource so they can meet the demand for information. They need to position themselves for the inevitable change in the way data are managed and organizations are held accountable for their data.

The underlying theme is a more mature data management discipline and DAMA International is leading that effort. One of the initiatives in this effort is to establish permanent SIGs in a variety of topic areas. These SIGs will be announced at the Conference and interested people will be invited to join those SIGs and contribute their expertise.

It’s a time for use to redouble our efforts to develop a recognized professional discipline that provides value-added support to the ever-changing needs of an intelligent learning organization. It’s a time for us to earn respect by developing and maintaining a high-quality data resource that meets the business information needs.

The DAMA International Europe Conference is again co-located with the Meta Data Europe Conference and the Information Quality Conference. The Event has eight tutorial tracks, five session tracks, and three keynote speakers covering a wide variety of data management topics. The Event features speakers from a many countries, with a wide variety of different backgrounds and experiences. Delegates will receive a CD-ROM containing all tutorials and all track sessions for the entire Event.

I hope that you will join us and other colleagues for a very exciting and rewarding experience at this Event in London.
