DAMA Keynote:
Data Management Technology Challenges – Past, Present and Future
Ian Walton,
Chief Designer, Enterprise Information and Data Management Solutions, British Telecom

Throughout the history of data processing we have continually been faced with challenges that we look to technology to help us solve. Moore’s Law somewhat dictates that there is always an unending supply of emerging technology available to enable new challenges and limits to be tackled. However, although technology helps solve data management problems let’s not forget that it’s also been a major contributor to creating those problems in the first place. In this session Ian takes a look at how technology in data management has helped us manage ever-increasing volumes of data, and looks at the challenges going forward.
  • How has and will technology increase the data management problem?
  • How has and will technology help manage an increasing data load?
  • Where will it all end?

Data Security on a Shoestring – Four Basic Steps to Shielding Business Information
Becky Kirkpatrick, Associate Vice President / Enterprise Information Architect, A. G. Edwards & Sons, Inc.

Past generations tell us how they didn’t have to worry about locking their front door. Today, not only do we lock our doors and windows, we install home security systems for added protection. Data Security has evolved in a similar fashion, requiring increasingly sophisticated security measures to protect valuable information assets. Fear of identity theft, in conjunction with regulatory action, have forced businesses to step up security. But how do you determine which information assets call for extra measures of protection? Who warrants access and under what conditions? How to establish this without overtaxing business and Information Technology personnel? In this session, you will learn an approach to:
  • Securing Business Information
  • Cataloguing & Classifying Business Data
  • Restricting Data Access
  • Partnering Business and IT for Security

Experiences with a Meta Data Repository at Network Rail
Mike Howard, Network Rail
Robert Daniels-Dwyer, Network Rail

There is increasing need within organisations to understand, interpret, and exploit data appropriately. Standardised metadata can facilitate a major improvement in the ability to exchange data efficiently and accurately. This organisation is in the process of developing new information systems and business processes. The existence of agreed upon metadata for sharing information will promote more efficient system planning and business process re-engineering. This presentation focuses on the adoption of a policy adopted for their Meta Data Architecture. This is to enable standard data element components to be defined and recorded in a Meta Data Repository and it functions as the central source of meta data information.
  • Why is metadata becoming more important for this organisation?
  • General overview of the role of the Meta Data Repository
  • Meta data solutions for developing the Meta Data Repository

Utilising Object Orientation, UML and MDA in Data Warehouse Development
Aija Palomaki, Enterprise Architect, NOKIA Corporation

Object Orientation, UML and MDA have not always found favor in the data management community. We argue though that utilizing them together in a database context has great potential. Constructing models using OO early on allows more concentration on declarative aspects -what the system is about. We can map models to ER models, Java code or whatever given suitable MDA-style transformations. Enabling technologies are UML that allows extending the semantics of the language so that domain specific features can be addressed and MDA that provides a framework for using these domain specific UML languages. Both Data Warehousing and “traditional” software development have much to learn from each other.

Graham Witt, Commonwealth Bank of Australia

There is a major chasm at Row Three in the Zachman Framework: a major disconnect between the information that business needs to operate successfully and the databases managed by IT. Business and data management seem to be on separate and diverging paths. What is needed to close the chasm and build a high-quality data resource that meets the ever-changing information needs of the business? What needs to be done to return to the basic principles that have already been established? This panel of experts will provide their view of what is needed to get business and data management on the same track and interacting in a cooperative manner.

Semantic Management of Metadata - Building One Enterprise
Zvi Schreiber, CEO, Unicorn

This presentation describes a novel approach where proprietary metadata schemas are mapped to a common metamodel and metadata transformations are inferred automatically. The approach is demonstrated with a published case study from the Tennessee Valley Authority, one of the US’s largest and most diverse utility and power company. This approach allowed migration of metadata between two semantically different repositories with unprecedented speed and accuracy using semantic mapping in support of rolling out of the One Enterprise vision.
  • Semantic mapping of metadata schemas to a central metamodel
  • Automatic transformation of metadata
  • Importance of standards, such as MOF and XMI, and of the Eclipse framework
  • Relationship between metadata management and data management
  • Metamodels as ontology’s of IT

How Semantic Business Rules Improve Veracity of Data Warehouse Information: Case Studies
Adrian McKeon, MD, Infoshare Limited

15 years ago, firms spent 75% of IT budgets on new development and 25% fixing things. Increasing data integration problems from disparate data sources costs IT 70-80% fixing things due to data anomalies. For example:
  • A telecomms company integrated data from 8 external sources for intelligence delivery to mobiles. Lack of control over source data caused constant bizarre integration anomalies requiring high cost manual intervention.
  • Up to 30% of a bank’s trades failed due to data inconsistencies across multiple systems. Data correction accounted for 80% of operating costs.

This presentation describes the equation between semantics, data quality and business intelligence and how to resolve these business problems.

Bringing Structure to Unstructured Information
Mike Collett, Director, Schemeta

While your CRM, ERP, databases and business applications may have a well-managed metadata framework, odds are your unstructured information world is running amok. With portals popping out all over, with a celebration of "arbitrary schema" and little governance over metadata, how can information be discovered, retrieved and integrated? That is, how do you provide some level of standards and governance, some structure to consistently organize the metadata and taxonomies for the multitude of content management and portal applications blooming in response to the flood of unstructured information? In this session, you learn about:
  • Re-use and governance over shared metadata, schema and taxonomies
  • Leveraging standards developed for structured systems on the unstructured side of the house
  • Using cross-system metadata management to improve enterprise search

Process Modeling for Data Professionals
Alec Sharp, Consultant, Clariteq Systems Consulting Ltd.

In recent years, there has been a huge resurgence of interest in everything to do with business processes. This shows up in such seemingly diverse areas as the “vanilla-ization” of ERP implementations, the return of BPR, and the latest trend – Business Process Management. To maintain relevance in this environment, Data Management professionals must have an understanding of what constitutes "process orientation" and how to work with business processes. This presentation covers proven, practical techniques for doing just that. Highlights include:
  • How “re-engineering” became respectable again
  • What business processes really are, and how to discover them
  • Why process modeling begins before you begin process modeling
  • Successful process modeling, and why it’s different than data modeling
  • Philosophies and frameworks for working with processes
  • Examples of process-oriented projects that supported data management goals
