Are NoSQL Database Servers Suitable for Data Warehousing?
Rick van der Lans, R20/Consultancy

Traditional SQL products have dominated the database market for a long time. But if we listen to the media we might get the idea that the end of SQL is near. Everyone talks about this new generation of database servers that are known by the intriguing term NoSQL. Examples of NoSQL database servers are Google’s Bigtable, Apache's CouchDB, Hadoop, Amazon's SimpleDb, MongoDB, and InfiniteGraph. All these products claim to be better than SQL database servers. But is this pure hype or is this reality? Do these products really offer something special, will they eventually replace the well-known database servers, and are these products suitable for data warehousing? Can they handle large query workloads? Van der Lans will present a balanced overview of these products and how they compare with classic products.
  • What exactly are NoSQL database servers?
  • Different categories of NoSQL products, including document stores, wide-column stores, key/value stores, multi-value stores, and graph data stores
  • Haven't we always had non-SQL products?
  • What are the advantages and disadvantages of NoSQL products?

Insights into Business Semantics Management
Dr. Pieter De Leenheer, Research Director, Collibra

Clear and uniform business definitions are an essential starting point for information governance.  However, many tools still operate on the technical metadata level.  To empower business-driven information governance, technical metadata should be seeking grounding in business semantics that are agreed on by subject matter experts.

This session will walk through business cases in technology, finance and government and illustrate where agreeing on business semantics requires a collaborative and iterative approach.

Automated Process Discovery and Analysis - Case SAP ERP
Teemu Lehto, VP, QPR Software Plc
Peter Aiken, Founder, Data Blueprint & President, DAMA International

Organizations spend a lot of resources for manually modeling and discovering business processes. However, this traditional method is vulnerable to human interpretation, relies on subjective data, lacks objective validation techniques and is time-consuming and costly. Automated Business Process Discovery and Analysis (ABPD) utilises data stored in operative IT systems, like ERP systems.
  • ABPD algorithms discover all process variations, show business processes in graphical format
  • Point out bottlenecks and provide accurate measurement results
  • ABPD applied to ERP systems like SAP help organizations to save costs, speed up the process, make better quality
  • Facilitates compliance with agreed practices and re-document IT system usage

The Ethics of Analytics
Frank Buytendijk, Founder, Beingfrank - Strategy and Research

"If we are smart enough, we have all the data, and the best tools, we can solve any problem." True as that may be, but should we? BI tools offer "the power to know", but is all knowledge good? Many organizations have a social media code of conduct, but who has an analytics code of conduct? Questions, questions... Attend this session and walk away with more questions than you had when you came in. Be careful, there is no way back. Once you step in the world of philosophy, you learn to doubt everything, except doubt itself. Only for the brave, and not for the faint at heart.

Understanding and Implementing Information Risk Management
Victoria Winningham, Principal, Metalethia LLC

“Risk” is becoming a factor in business considerations on a par with efficiency and effectiveness. Risk is fundamentally tied to data, but very often the focus is on using data to understand risk, e.g. by building risk data warehouses, rather than understanding the fundamental operational risk inherent in the data itself. This presentation examines the nature of risk and builds on experiences, primarily from data quality projects, to provide a roadmap of how to deal with risk. Emphasis is placed on predicting data risks and both removing latent risks, as well as reducing the likelihood of events that will trigger risk events. Early monitoring to detect risk events is also discussed.

Attendees will learn:

  • What risk is, and what its components are
  • The diverse ways in which risk is related to data
  • How basic data quality projects can be part of a risk management framework
  • Different approaches to risk mitigation
  • Dealing with risk events after they have occurred.

Session 2: Beyond Data Governance: Building Your Corporate Data Strategy
Jill Dyché, Vice President, Thought Leadership, DataFlux

When asked about their corporate data strategies, many business and IT professionals produce a data model, cite the ongoing effort of building a data dictionary (usually in the form of a spreadsheet), and are in the throes of securing funding for a data quality tool. All this to support a data warehouse that’s quickly being marginalized as a commodity.

Of course, your situation might not be as dire. Perhaps you’re just beginning your BI journey and want to position data as part of your overall program. Or maybe you need business help prioritizing your data projects.  How to get management’s attention? In this presentation noted consultant and author Jill Dyché will present a framework for a corporate data strategy that transcends the platforms and buzzwords-du-jour and positions information as worthy of its own investment and inarguably business-enabling.

What You Will Learn:

  • Whether or not to try to quantify data as a corporate asset
  • Which frameworks get traction with business executives
  • How Jill knows on the first day of a project whether a company’s data will really be viewed as a corporate asset

Why BI Never Made it to the CEO Agenda?
Frank Buytendijk, Founder, Beingfrank - Strategy and Research

Western management is obsessed with analysis. Every job profile requires analytical skills and analytical questions are the backbone of the complete market of business intelligence, performance management and data warehousing, and more. But there is an important area where analysis doesn't really work: the field of strategy. Strategy is full of dilemmas, between this and that, between now and later, between different stakeholders. Analysis only confirms and deepens those dilemmas. Strategy requires the opposite approach of analysis: synthesis. Frank wrote the book on that subject. Enjoy Frank's high-paced and thought-provoking presentation on how to expand your professional toolkit with all you need to take business intelligence to a higher level.

Applying Information Quality Principles to Proactive Data Protection Compliance
Daragh O Brien, Managing Director, Castlebridge Associates

Compliance with EU Data Protection regulations is an increasing concern in many organisations. In the UK, fines can be up to £500,000 per offence, and with the core Directive under review to standardise penalities across Europe other countries will face similar penalties by 2015. All too often Data Protection Governance is a reactive endeavour, where steps are taken in response to a crisis. This presentation teaches how the application of proven Information Quality Principles can put organisations in the position of being able to proactively measure and manage their Data Protection obligations in a way that empowers management, builds trust, and meets or exceeds the increasingly exacting standards required by Regulators.
