Keynote Outline

Virtualization is not a new concept in the world of IT. Memory, storage and network virtualization have been around for some time. And now it’s time for data virtualization. The essence of data virtualization is the decoupling of data consumers and data stores. By decoupling those two a more flexible architecture can be developed. Applying data virtualization in a data warehouse architecture means that the new user demands can be implemented more easily, including self-service BI, operational BI, sandboxing, and deep analytics. But data virtualization is not just a technology, it also has an impact on how we think about information management, data governance, and master data management. In this keynote Rick van der Lans will explain what the effect will be of data virtualization on all those topics.

Keynote Outline

LIFE is the multi-award winning wildlife series made by the BBC. Four years in the making, 150 global locations, 2,000 days filming and 3,000 hours of high definition footage all to create a series of 10 one hour episodes. This is the story behind the scenes - how the filming was done, from the latest camera techniques to coping with working in wild places and with wild animals that never read the script. And it's also a story of data from a filmmakers perspective.

How was the mass of digital footage handled, marshalled, catalogued and archived - from the design and implementation of meta data standards to the management of umpteen different formats? And how do the lessons learnt  from projects like this influence the data management strategy of a global multiplatform broadcaster?
