Introduction

The Zachman Certified™ - Enterprise Architect programme enables working professionals to develop the theoretical and technical skills needed in the 21st century workplace. More and more companies are looking for employees or consultants who can demonstrate command and deliver results in this wide body of knowledge. Some of those now even making Zachman Framework™ certification a requirement.

A distinctive element of this program is "reality-based learning," or the process of integrating theory with work and life experience. Practical in its design, the Zachman Certified™ Courses gives today's Enterprise Architects the opportunity to strengthen their skills as well as broaden their understanding of industry trends and the use of The Zachman Framework™. This programme grants a professionally relevant certification, opening up opportunities for career advancement and enhanced marketability. It is also a valuable tool for companies and organizations striving to set a higher standard for internal and external performance assessment, establishing hiring criteria, and improved market positioning.

What sets the Zachman Certified™ program apart from the rest and qualifies the certification with instant credibility is the Zachman Exam that was developed by an independent, third-party testing institution: ICCP - Institute for Certification of Computing Professionals. This exam was developed by a collaborative effort between Zachman International, the ICCP and DAMA International. In addition, this exam has now been included as part of ICCP's CDMP (Certified Data Management Professional) certification program.

Certification requires taking the 3 necessary Zachman courses and passing of the objective Zachman Enterprise Architecture Examination. Maintaining currency in your field involves recertification. Your Zachman Certified™ status expires after three years. Recertification requires taking the Zachman Certified™ Refresher and passing the examination. This is a life-long commitment to professionalism in your chosen career in the IS/IT field. Your certification is equivalent to the same level of credential as available for Doctors, Accountants and Engineers.

Each candidate in the Zachman Certified™ program, can view their individual transcripts on ZachmanInternational.com. Once certification is complete, each Zachman Certified™ - Enterprise Architect is "searchable" by anyone on ZachmanInternational.com here: Status Verification by using their full name or issued Zachman Architect ID. Their listing will include their achieved Zachman Certified™ level (1, 2 or 3), if their status is current, along with their unique Zachman Certified™ seal with embedded Architect ID. Overview

The Zachman Certified™ - Enterprise Architect (Level 1) is a public verification that the bearer has completed the necessary education courses to understand:

  • Why Enterprise Architecture is critical to the survival of the Enterprise.
  • The difference between Engineering Enterprises and building and running Systems (i.e. between engineering the Enterprise and manufacturing the Enterprise).
  • The difference between an ontology and a methodology
  • The difference between "Primitive" (engineering) models and "Composite" (manufacturing) models.
  • The compromise implications of not doing all of the Enterprise's Architecture.
  • How to partition the Enterprise Architecture work so it can be done over a longer period of time.
  • Conceptually how to migrate out of the current legacy environment into an "architected" environment.
  • Conceptually how to realize "Federated Architecture."
  • Practically how to:
    • build primitive models for the Cells of The Framework™
    • build the Enterprise's Architecture project by project
    • maintain Enterprise (horizontal) integration
    • maintain Quality (vertical) alignment
    • define implementation boundaries (Enterprise Architecture planning)
    • use Enterprise Architecture in the day-to-day management and operation of the Enterprise


Details and Certification Requirements

Level 1 - Zachman Certified™ - Enterprise Architect (10 Credits)

Education Requirement:

  • Z101 MasterClass: Framework Foundations (2 Credits)
    • Taught by John A. Zachman, the objective of this two-day course is to build an understanding of the concepts of Enterprise Architecture and develop a sense of urgency for implementing those concepts in a modern enterprise. Enterprise Architecture is fundamental for enabling an enterprise to assimilate internal changes in response to the external dynamics and uncertainties of the information age environment. It not only constitutes a baseline for managing change, but also provides the mechanism by which the reality of the enterprise and its systems can be aligned with management intentions.
  • Z102 Masterclass: Implementation Strategy Examples (2 Credits)
    • Taught by Stan Locke, this course explores how to strategically implement Enterprise Architecture. It will look at how to bring together two apparently opposing conditions - the short term need to deliver a solution on time and within budget, and the long term adaptability requirements of the enterprise. The course examines the underlying constructs of The Zachman Framework™ and the implications of "Thinking Zachman" to give a more balanced view of the entire enterprise. Given that "architecting" an Enterprise is fundamental to the ongoing success of an organization, this course has attempted to bring real world examples of what to do and not to do. The blending of consulting situations with the theory of the Zachman approach yields a most interesting set of practical guideposts to those working on engineering the enterprise.
  • Z103 Zachman Enterprise Modeling Workshop (3 Credits)
    • This workshop is designed to bridge the gap between the conceptual and the practical. The concepts presented in the MasterClass provide the bedrock for understanding Enterprise Architecture and The Zachman Framework™, however the catalyst for bringing these concepts together is application, project and solution. The modeling workshop is designed for just that - applied knowledge. For instance, it's great to know that a Primitive model of the Enterprise exists, but what does one look like and how do you build one? How do you use a Primitive Model, derive Composite models and then ultimately manage your Enterprise with them? These are the issues that have plagued management for years, and these are the issues we will address in this workshop.
  • Exam: ICCP Zachman Exam (1 Credit)
    • Upon completion of the above course material and workshop, an accredited certification test is administered by Zachman International which is sanctioned by the:
      ICCP ICCP - Institute for Certification of Computing Professionals

Additional Requirements:

  • All Level 1 Zachman Certified™ - Enterprise Architects are also required to have:
    • A personal-use license of The Zachman Framework™- included at no cost at Enterprise Standards registration (1 Credit)
  • All Level 1 Zachman Certified™ - Enterprise Architects may complete the final required credit with ONE of the following:
    • A copy of John's eBook- is included with MasterClass registration- $249 US value (1 Credit)
    • Registered for the The Zachman Framework™ MetaFrameworks Standards - $120US annual membership (1 Credit)

Upon Completion:
If these requirements are met, you will become a Zachman Certified™ - Enterprise Architect. This certification is valid for 3 years. Upon expiration, the Z104 Refresher: Zachman Certified™ Refresher can be taken and recommencement of certification activated.
