Critical Success Factors For Long-Term Information Quality Management For The Coming Age Information Architecture: Making IS Work for Business

Takaaki Tsubaki, R & D Group Chief Consultant, Data Research Institute
More than a few Japanese companies have been improving their information and data quality using Information Resource Management principles over the past 10 years. After 5 to 10 years of continuous practice, some companies have achieved significant information quality improvement through the integration of enterprise wide metadata.
Based on quantitative research and detailed interview with those successful companies, this presentation describes the strategy and tactics used by the managers who solved those long-term challenges.

  • Quantitative report of successful IRM practices
  • Strategies: vision, authorisation, organisation, sponsorship
  • Tactics: standardisation, what, who, when, how, where, why

Kathy Hunter, Manager - Enterprise Information Quality, One2One
In this presentation Ms. Hunter describes how quality principles such as Kaizen and TQdM® can be applied to information architecture quality.
One2One has been expanding at a phenomenal rate since its launch in 1993. Understandably, Information Management has not always been its top priority. Ms. Hunter will discuss how One2One is developing an information architecture that is driven by the information requirements of the business.
Using a structured approach to understanding and recording the business view of information, a common metadata repository is now being built and a cross-functional team has been introduced to safeguard the agreed definitions of key system-held information.

  • Using a structured approach to information analysis
  • Maximising the impact of information analysis by synergising efforts
  • Developing a central store of common metadata
Proving the benefits of common metadata to both the business and the I/S community

Taking the First Step Toward Information Quality Data Protection: Another Perspective on Information Quality
Louis Walters, Data Validity Officer, Montana Department of Corrections
Where do you start with improving Information Quality? My experience has shown me that it is easy to delegate a problem. After an audit by the legislature, the Montana Department of Corrections (MDOC) was strongly urged to hire a Data Validity Officer. This title was initially seen as an oxymoron, today it is not.
The MDOC has 2,000 people (records) under secure supervision (locked up, IN PRISON) in five states. In addition, we supervise under court order, almost 7,000 felons! Total Offender records in the database number over 40,000. How can one person correct 15 years of data collected on this many people?
You do it through Deming: TEAMWORK
This presentation discusses how MDOC has used Deming's 8th Point of Quality: "Drive out fear" and several of Larry English's TQdM(r) steps to assist in improving quality.

Dr. John Woulds, Director of Operations, Data Protection Act Registrar
Legislation for the protection of personal information, at both the UK and European level, establishes a framework for information quality and security, for customer choice and control. Compliance is not a voluntary option; it is an enforceable requirement.    But protecting your customers' personal information is also good business practice. Who's afraid of data protection? If you believe in quality information for quality business, then you believe in data protection. It is an objective for business, not an obstacle.
What do you need to know?

  • Data protection - the legal requirements
  • The quality connection
  • The impact on business.

Why, What and How of Information Quality Assessment Launching a Customer-Centric Internet Bank

Nonna Milmeister, Consulting Principal, AJILON Australia
Information Quality Assessment is the first step in the Information Quality Improvement. IQ Assessment is a powerful tool to draw the attention of the executive management to data quality issues and therefore ensure that IQ improvement is allocated a high priority status. It is very important to produce the evidence that can be quantified and measured. These measures must also include the cost of poor data quality.
This presentation describes different techniques for information quality assessment. These techniques are illustrated on a number of successfully completed projects in public and private companies. Milmeister will discuss some of the lessons learned and helpful tips that were used to manage the Information Quality Assessment projects.

· Business Issues Assessment - Are these issues really IQ related? · Data Quality Assessment - How to manage the unmanageable · Business Rules - Do we really know them? · Cost Modelling and other techniques to identify the cost of poor data quality · How long does IQ Assessment take? - Project Management approach · Where to from here?

Robert Rosko, Vice President Internet Development, Wingspan Bank
This case study explains how Wingspan focused on the customer experience to design and implement a unique site that creates a positive customer environment. Mr. Rosko will review strategies and key elements of leveraging the integration leading to site delivery. The key to success in the Internet marketplace is a positive total customer experience. Once an emerging market, the Web is fast-becoming a global standard for new and established businesses. With the visibility of sites recording millions of 'hits' per day, and the competition only a mouse-click away, ensuring immediate customer satisfaction is essential. Wingspan Bank was rated highest in its class by Money magazine in their first review of web-based banking services last year.
